Lap of Luxury: On the road with the Lamborghini Aventador S

In this edition of the Lap of Luxury, we're bringing it back to where it all began by revisiting Lamborghini. But this time we're checking out the brand's even faster, brand-new flagship: Aventador S.

Alessandro Farmeschi, COO of Automobili Lamborghini America, called the new Aventador S the evolution of the Aventador that the company launched a few years ago.

Lamborghini, the iconic Italian super sports car, was the first car we featured on the Lap of Luxury, taking the $238,500 Huracan out on the West Side Highway in Manhattan.

On this day, Alessandro took us for a spin in the Aventador S, redesigned this year. Starting price: $421,000. Alessandro said it has 740HP, and can go 0 to 62mph in 2.9 seconds.

Among its technical features, the Aventador has a new mode of driving. You now have three driving options. Strada, which Alessandro called the normal way of driving in New York City. Sport mode is a little more fun. Corsa is the highest performance level that you'd use on the racetrack, for instance. The new mode, Ego mode, is all about the driver. You can customize the engine response, the gearbox, the suspension, and the four-wheel steering system.

Lamborghini's engineers in Sant'Agata Bolognese had a tough job making this year's Aventador better than ever, but they rose to the occasion. Alessandro said the car has been completely reviewed from every technical point of view.

The new four-wheel steering system helps the car to be agile in traffic and along sharp curves and makes it really stable at high speeds.

Lamborghini has also introduced magnetorheological suspension, a feature that lets the car change its behavior based on the driving modes, going from less to more stiff conditions.

A more aggressive front bumper increases the downforce and cools down the radiator.

The new rear diffuser hosts an upgraded exhaust system that gives the Aventador its incredible sound.

I took the car for a drive myself. I went easy on the city streets but was definitely impressed.
