A new Utah father says a hospital charged him to hold his baby after his wife gave birth.  Ryan Grassley shared a photo of his hospital bill on Reddit. The bill showed that Grassley was charged $39.35 for “skin to skin” contact.

"The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife's neck/chest,” he wrote. “Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill.”

Grassley, of Spanish Fork, jokingly started a GoFundMe to raise $39 to pay for the charge. He added that any money raised over $39.35 would go to a vasectomy “because I never want to go (through) these sleepless new baby nights again."  The campaign has raised $40 so far.

One Reddit user said she is a nurse and said the fee was probably because an additional staff member needed to be present in the OR as the baby was given to the father to hold.  She said that skin to skin contact in the OR is a relatively new trend.

Grassley adds:  "To be clear I wasn't complaining or trying to send people on a witch hunt for the hospital.  We had a very positive experience during the birth of our son, and the hospital and staff were great throughout the entire process."
