Amazon to open bookstores in malls
NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - The online retailer that some claim is killing brick and mortar stores is apparently planning to open hundreds of its own brick and mortar bookstores.
Amazon hasn't announced any details but the head of a large mall operators said Amazon plans 300 to 400 stores.
Sandeep Mathrani, chief executive of General Growth Properties Inc. made the statement on an earnings call on Tuesday.
Amazon already operates one physical bookstore. It opened a location in Seattle in November.
Business analysts say the stores could serve as a dual purpose of acting as mini-warehouses and points for returns of unwanted items purchased online.
