Who was Dr. Henry Bello? Profile of Bronx-Lebanon Hospital shooter

A former Bronx-Lebanon Hospital employee named Dr. Henry Bello returned with a rifle hidden under his white lab coat and opened fire Friday, killing a female doctor and wounding six others before taking his own life, according to police sources.

Dr. Bello was a family medicine physician at the hospital until he resigned in 2015 in lieu of being fired over sexual harassment allegations, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press. It is unclear why he was still listed on the hospital's website on Friday afternoon.

Bello had a history of sexual harassment cases, the AP reported, citing records. He was arrested in 2004 on a charge of sexual abuse and arrested again in 2009 after being accused of looking up women's skirts with a mirror.

A former colleague described Bello as problematic, aggressive, and threatening after he was forced to leave his position two years ago.

Also, state records show that Bello had only a limited permit to practice medicine, which expired a year ago. He is not listed in the state's registry of physicians.

Fox 5 News reported that he was apparently targeting at least one of his victims.

His body was found on an upper floor of the hospital as police conducted a sweep of the building. Police said he tried to set himself on fire before shooting himself.

Despite the police releasing Dr. Bello's name shortly after the shooting, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill declined to formally name the shooter at a late afternoon news conference in front of the hospital.

His last known resident was an apartment in the East Village.
