Residents fight to keep local super market open

Fox5NY (WNYW) - Elected officials including public advocate Letiticia James, City Council member Ydanis Rodgriguez and Borough President Gail Brewer joined a rally with several hundred residents in support of The Associated grocery store on Fort Washington Avenue near West 187th Street. The store has been in the neighborhood for almost 60 years. 

"My mother shops here, let’s keep it open" New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat said.

The food store's $12,000 a month lease expired on December 31. Local leaders say a major drug store chain was ready to step at a $50,000 a month rent, but may be having second thoughts. Whatever happens, it's clear the days of a $12,000 a month rent are fading fast.

The 20 employees who work at the neighborhood landmark have their own concerns.

"These employees have kids, families" said manager Steven Almonte .

We tried to reach out to the landlord to get their perspective on the property but were unable to make contact. The community board chairman says residents are determined to have their voices heard and let the businesses know about the impact.

The store owner will have to go to court on Monday morning to fight the eviction order. In the meantime, residents and local leaders are vowing to keep up their fight.
