Organizations helping senior citizens

- For Sofia Torres moving back to New York from Las Vegas wasn't easy, especially at her age. She had no family here and was feeling alone and lost.

Torres was living in shelters and in strangers' homes paying to sleep on a couch. But it all changed when she found SAGE, which stands for Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders. SAGE has five senior centers in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The services are free and open to the public.

Just like SAGE there is also JASA, an organization that ensures that older adults can stay in their home, in their community as they age, as independently as possible. JASA touches over 43,000 seniors every year, with 25 senior centers and a retirement community, providing home delivered meals, and health care among other things.

Organizations like JASA and SAGE are safety nets for seniors.
