Police arrested two Staten Island teens accused of bringing loaded handguns to school Monday, the department said.

A 16-year-old student at Curtis High School on Hamilton Street had a .22-caliber pistol, while an 18-year-old student had a .40-caliber handgun, the NYPD said.

The AP reported that the guns were found in the students' bags.

The Department of Education said in a statement that the "safety of students always comes first" and the "troubling incident was swiftly addressed."
