NYPD: Body camera captured video of fatal shooting of armed man

A dispute between a landlord and a tenant in the Bronx on Monday night grew heated and violent and ended with a police officer wounded and a man dead.

Police officers shot and killed one of the men involved in the dispute, the NYPD said. That man was armed with a large combat-style knife, police said.

The man with the knife apparently chased another man out of a home and around a car near Prospect Avenue and East 181 Street in the Belmont section after 8 p.m., police said.

Police officers confronted the distraught man, who then lunged at them with the knife, the NYPD said. The man cut a cop on the hand. Two officers fired, fatally wounding him, police said. The man was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill said that police body-camera video captured the encounter. He said he expects the video to be released at some point while the investigation unfolds.

While crime scene officers worked to collect evidence on the shooting, neighbors told Fox 5 that they believe the knife-wielding suspect was about to be evicted and taunted police as he ignored their order to drop the knife. One neighbor said officers told the man to put down the knife but he said he was "ready to die."
