New York Fashion Week big economic impact

New York Fashion Week is back in town. Beyond the trends that we'll see walking down the runways, the economic impact of this biannual ritual in New York is significant, according to a new report released by Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

The economic impact is over $900 million between September and February fashion weeks each year, she said. And the big business extends throughout the city. The big business of fashion in New York means that 5 percent of the city's workforce is employed in the fashion sector in jobs that offer an average annual salary of over $73,000, according to the report.

The event makes an impact on the bottom line and beyond, according to IMG's Catherine Bennett, who is running New York Fashion Week.

For local New York designer Karolina Zmarlak, who designs, produces, and sells her line in New York, there is no place she'd rather be.

New York Fashion Week will be at Moynihan Station and downtown from September 8 through September 15. And if you're not lucky enough to score an invite, you can watch livestreams of the shows on NYFW.com.
