Messaging apps becoming so much more

- Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat are just some of the messaging apps that have blown up in popularity in recent years, even surpassing the basic text message as a preferred way to stay in touch for some.

But now the makers of these apps are making it easier for users to do much more than just send a basic message or emoji. Earlier this year Facebook rolled out mobile payments through Messenger. As of this month you can order an Uber car directly through Facebook Messenger, without ever clicking on the app. Messenger is also testing out shopping and food delivery functions. WeChat -- an app hugely popular in china -- has its own online shopping platform.

This is all called conversational commerce, in which users can accomplish all of their mobile needs through a single, simple messaging app.

Some say they're not quite ready to commit exclusively to Facebook Messenger when it comes to all things mobile. The companies behind the apps are betting otherwise and hoping over time the promise of convenience and simplicity will make you stay put.
