Suit over Long Island friendly fire police shooting settled

MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The widow of a police officer killed in a friendly fire shooting on Long Island has settled her lawsuit against the MTA and others over the death.

A lawyer for Paula Breitkopf says she has settled her 2012 lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.

Breitkopf's husband, Nassau County Police Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf, arrived after other officers shot and killed an emotionally disturbed, knife-wielding man inside his home in Massapequa Par on March 12, 2011.

An MTA officer fired at Breitkopf, killing him.

A 2012 report by then-District Attorney Kathleen Rice found that MTA Officer Glen Gentile did not know that Breitkopf was a police officer. No charges were filed.

Jeffrey Kimmel, the attorney for Breitkopf's family, said the settlement will allow the family to begin the healing process.
