Hoverboards illegal in NYC

Hold your hoverboard!  According to the NYPD, those self-balancing scooters are illegal in New York City. The popular transportation device is considered a motor vehicle that cannot be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

On Monday, the NYPD 26 Precinct , which covers Morningside Heights and parts of West Harlem, tweeted that electric hoverboards are illegal.  The tweet read:  "Be advised that the electric #hoverboard is illegal as per Admin. Code 19-176.2."  The tweet was later deleted because it reportedly referenced the wrong municipal code.

The fine for illegally riding a hoverboard is up to $200.
