Enjoying pools at NYC's swanky hotels

You may think New York City's hotel pools are just for VIPs. But you don't need to be an A-lister to keep cool at the hottest spots this summer. You just have to be willing to spend some money.

The swimming pool at the Hotel Americano on 27th Street and 10th Avenue in Manhattan definitely offers a more intimate setting but the views of Chelsea and Midtown Manhattan are expansive.

From the 10th floor of the Hotel Americano, La Piscine rooftop and pool overlooks the High Line and the Empire State Building.  The roof of this modern boutique hotel doubles as a dining space and pool deck.

The Hotel Americano is launching Monday night movie screenings on the terrace. Greek and Mediterranean dishes are always on the menu. Pool passes Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. are $40 a day.

Another popular swimming destination in the Meatpacking District is the Dream Downtown. Day passes are available during the week only for $60 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sometimes the only way to cool down is to jump in and the pool at the McCarren Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is open seven days a week for just that. The pool is open to the public 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Day passes start at $40 and range in price, depending on the day of the week. Day passes can be reserved up to 24 hours in advance if there's still space. You can reserve a pool package for a big group months in advance. You can get a section of the bleachers for 10 people. That costs $1,350 and includes food and cocktails for the whole squad.
