Defensive driving tips for safe travel

Summer is almost here and that means more drivers on the road heading for vacation destinations and weekend getaways.

But no matter what season and where you are going, you want to get to your destination safely. That's where defensive driving skills come into play.

When we are driving we are looking at what's going on in front of us and around us, but how far ahead do you look?

"You should be looking a mile down the road when driving on the highway," said Robert Sinclair, AAA.

We all know texting while driving is not only illegal but unsafe. Yet people still do it along with other forms of distracted driving.

Part of defensive driving is knowing that you are responsible for keeping an eye on other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Your attitude behind the wheel is part of driving defensively.

You can also take a defensive driving course to help you be prepared for emergency situations.
