Cuomo: WiFi, cell service coming to all subway stations

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - In his latest announcement about improvements planned for public places in New York City, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that all 278 subway stations would be getting WiFi and cellular phone service by the end of 2016.

"It is our obligation to build a NY for the next 100 years. The MTA is the heart of it but we're doing it all across the state," said Cuomo from the NY Transit Museum in Brooklyn.

Also going up at every subway station, bus and rail car will be USB charging stations.

Mobile ticketing will be offered on subways and buses in 2018. The Long Island Rail Road and Metro North will offer mobile ticketing in six months.

"We need to step into the 21st Century and bring technology in the transit system," said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast.

More than six million people ride the New York City subway system on its busiest days.

Earlier this week, Cuomo announced plans for the redevelopment of Penn Station, the Farley Post Office and the expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Center.
