Coast Guard searching south of Long Island for missing boaters

The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday said it is expanding its search for two missing boaters from Rhode Island to the waters south of Montauk, New York.

Linda Carman, 54, and her son, Nathan Carman, 22, of of Middletown, Connecticut, departed from Point Judith, Rhode Island, Saturday night for a fishing trip near Block Island, the Coast Guard said. They were on a 32-foot center console aluminum boat called the Chicken Pox.

When they failed to return by Sunday, the Coast Guard began a search. Now, responders are searching an area of about 11,000 square miles, roughly twice the size of Connecticut, for the boaters.

The Cutter Bonito, the Cutter Campbell, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane, a C-130 airplane, and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter are participating in the search.
