Brooklyn's greenest block unveiled

Sylvia Alexander has lived on the same block of Stuyvesant Avenue since 1967. In fact, her mother used to do the gardening for the neighborhood. And, well, you know the saying: "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

The area in Bedford-Stuyvesant once known as Doctors Row (because of the professionals who called it home) is the winner of the 23rd annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. Everybody chipped in $100 and a bit of their time to make it look this way.

More than 150 blocks from neighborhoods throughout the entire borough entered the contest this year. Winners are selected by an expert panel of judges, including Brooklyn Botanical Garden staff and local horticulture professionals.

The block between Bainbridge and Chauncey streets is anchored by beautiful homes and beautiful people. Ms. Sudbury, 84, has lived here her whole life.
