21CF Impact Week: making a difference

- 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox 5, is spending the week making a difference in communities across the country.

Tuesday morning, students at P.S. 161 in Harlem received a special treat. Employees from 21st Century Fox came in as gym teachers for the day. The volunteers took part in the inaugural week of service called 21CF Impact Week.

"We have a whole week of events -- everything from here working with kids. We did a movie night and ice cream social with some seniors. We packed kits for our troops overseas. We're going to be painting a school a little bit later in the week," said Vijay Sudan, the executive director of social impact for 21st Century Fox.

This pilot program was made possible through a partnership with New York Cares. Over 1,000 employees are volunteering for impact week. 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch said this is just the beginning.

"There's already a lot of local activities going on in each part of the company. But what we want to be able to do is get people across the place to do it," Murdoch said. "So this is really the pilot, to do it in New York and L.A., and then we'll be doing it across the country in other cities with the local stations and with all of our colleagues, but also around the world."

Fox 5's Rosanna Scotto put Murdoch to work in Midtown Tuesday. Volunteers filled backpacks with school supplies for students at the Bushwick School of Social Justice. The high school's main objective is college prep. Now with the help of these employees, all 375 students will be the school supplies that they need.

"It's amazing to think that some people don't have the little things, the basics that they need to succeed in school," Scotto said. "And so I'm happy to give back to that part."

Impact Week will impact thousands of people nationwide.
