Jay-Z- first rapper nominated for Songwriter Hall of Fame

Music mogul Shawn Carter, best known as Jay-Z, made history as becoming the first rapper nominated for SongHall’s Songwriter Hall of Fame.

It was announced October 20 that the 21-Grammy winner was named among 12 performing songwriters and 12 non-performing songwriters.

The Hall of Fame celebrates and recognizes great composers and lyricists who create music known around the world.  

Those who are eligible of voting are able to vote for three non-performing songwriters including Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Maury Yeston, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. They are also able to vote for two nominees from the performing category, which include artists such as Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Bryan Adams, and George Michael.

Previous inductees include Michael Jackson, Jon Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, and Billy Joel.

Eligible votes have until December 16, 2016.

The induction ceremony will take place in New York City at its Annual Induction & Awards Gala June 15. 2017.
