Collective Soul sound credited to toilet paper roll

It's one of the most distinctive sounds from one of the biggest rock songs of the 1990s and now we know it is all thanks to an empty roll of toilet paper.

Collective Soul released the single "Shine" as the lead single from their 1994 debut album Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid.

Ed Roland, in an appearance today on Good Day New York, said that the distinctive "Yeah" that appears on the record was recorded by him singing into a toilet paper roll that he found in his bathroom.

It was actually recorded as a demo on an eight track recorder in a basement but when the band was signed, the demo was released instead of the band re-recording it.

The song became the #1 Album Rock Song of 1994 and has been called one of the 100 Greatest Songs of the '90s.

Collective Soul was to play a show at New York's Irving Plaza on Monday night.
