Toys for Tots donations stolen in Westchester

A real-life Scrooge is on the loose in Westchester County. Police say the humbug has stolen Toys for Tots donations, which should be going to children in need.

"I have no tolerance for someone that's going to steal from children," said Stephen Topilnycky, the Westchester County coordinator for Toys for Tots.

The toys were stolen sometime this week from Toys R Us locations in White Plains and Yonkers and a Modell's in Yonkers.

Toys for Tots emailed warnings to donation locations. Organizers says scammers are now calling ahead, claiming they're from the organization and making arrangements to pick up the donations.

Volunteers were able to save a collection from Babies R Us when a manager apparently caught on to the scam.

Volunteers have been working since October to bring gifts to teens, kids, and infants in need. Some toys have been recovered, but most were not.

Donation locations are still open, but time is running out, Topilnycky said.

Yonkers police are questioning two so-called persons of interest, though no criminal charges have been filed.
