Huge fire burns row homes and cars in Newark

NEW JERSEY (FOX5NY) - A fire on Friday morning in Newark spread to several buildings on both sides of the street.

It broke out about 3:30 a.m. in a row home on the 100 block of 14th Street in Newark in the windy overnight hours. Flames spread to both sides of the street and cars parked on the street even caught fire.

The fire burned at least five houses. Live power lines caused problems for firefighters.

It was unclear what started the fire. Officials believe it may have started in a corner building and then quickly spread because of the strong winds from the storm that passed through the region.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. One of them slipped on ice. No one else was hurt but the fire displaced at least three dozen people.

The weather is brutally cold with wind chills below zero as crews fight the flames.
