Worker falls down shaft in Manhattan

A construction worker fell down an elevator shaft and died in Manhattan Tuesday, officials said. Medics found the unresponsive and unconscious 30-year-old man on the ground at the bottom of a shaft inside 577 9th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen at about 12:40 p.m.

The worker was walking on across a beam when he fell into the shaft and down about four stories into standing water, police said. He was not wearing a harness, DNAinfo.com reported.

The medics brought the man to Bellevue Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
