Wheelchair fans out of luck at Citi Field's LIRR station

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - Brian Rocco moves adeptly around New York City streets in his wheelchair. He takes the subway to and from work, always finding a station that is wheelchair accessible with an elevator.

Brian is so accustomed to getting around independently he was taken by surprise the other night when he tried to get to a Mets game on the Long Island Rail Road. When he got off the train at Mets-Willets Point, the only way to get to the game was to walk up several flights of stairs.

He says he was it was disconcerting to discover that a big stop that serves Citi Field wouldn't be wheelchair accessible.

We reached out to the MTA to find out why the LIRR did not have way for wheelchair-bound fans to get to the stadium. A spokesman told us the MTA is in the process of getting all stations wheelchair accessible and that Willets Point is on the list.

In fact, renderings of the future LIRR train station at Citi Field show wheelchair access. But construction won't start until next year and won't be finished until 2017.

Brian thinks that's too long to wait.
