Aggressive fox bites 3 people in Westchester County

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - A fox attacked three people in Westchester County, New York, over the weekend, sparking fears that the aggressive animal has rabies. All three attacks happened in Yorktown.

"Stay alert and closely supervise children and pets when outside," Dr. Sherlita Amler, the county's health commissioner, said. "If you see a fox stay away from it and contact local police immediately."

The fox attacked a man who was out for a run on Lee Boulevard on Saturday at 6 a.m., officials said. Then a fox bit a man in his backyard on North Deerfield Road at 8:30 a.m. The next day, a fox bit a woman in her backyard. All three people are being treated for possible rabies exposure, health officials said.

An animal with rabies can become either abnormally aggressive or unusually tame, health officials said. The animal may stagger and froth at the mouth.

If you or someone you know is bitten by an animal or have contact with an animal you suspect has rabies, you must report it to the Westchester County Department of Health at (914) 813-5000, 24 hours a day.
