Ceremony marks 48th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination

ATLANTA - Monday, April 4 marked the 48th anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church held a Wreath-Laying Ceremony in the Heritage Sanctuary, the site of his funeral in 1968, to mark the day.

"Even though it was our personal loss, in many ways because there are so many people that are trying to continue his work, it warms my heart because I recognize I did not lose him in vain," said Dr. King's daughter Rev. Dr. Bernice King, who along with her brother, Martin Luther King III and Ebenezer Baptist Church Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock spoke during the ceremony.

Several from near and far attended the ceremony.

"I was moved from the moment I walked in the room because his recorded voice preaching in the background and then to be with his children and the park rangers who did a fabulous job of commemorating this event,  it was powerful in every way," said professor Robert Gibson, who traveled from Colorado and said he has taught Dr. King's work for 50 years.

The wreath will remain on the church until April 9 which is the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was buried.
