VIDEO: Glacier ice bridge breaks into lake

An ice bridge on the Perito Moreno Glacier -- one of three Patagonian glaciers that is still growing -- collapsed into Lago Argentino on Thursday morning, March 10.

These ruptures occur periodically when the slow-moving ice dams the water in one area of the lake. Eventually, the pressure from the rising water forces the rupture. The last rupture was in 2013.

The Perito Moreno Glacier occupies 97 square miles of Argentina’s Los Glacieres National Park and is the world’s third-largest reservoir of fresh water.
