Veteran brutally beats roommate with bolt cutters

A man at a homeless shelter for veterans is accused of a brutal attack on his roommate that left the victim in critical condition.

Police on Long Island say it happened at the Suffolk County United Veterans home in Yaphank early on Monday morning.

Suffolk County Police say Michael Hunter, 29, had a dispute with the unidentified victim and, while the man was sleeping, Hunter hit him multiple times in the head with bolt cutters.

The 58-year-old victim was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue in critical condition. His name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The victim is not a veteran but was staying at the home.

Detectives charged Hunter, who is a veteran, with attempted murder.  It was unclear if he had a lawyer.
