Trump's Secret Service will be constant presence in NYC

Every time President-elect Donald Trump moves so does the U.S. Secret Service. His motorcade can bring traffic to a temporary standstill. This is something New Yorkers especially those living and working near Trump Tower will need to get used to.

Under U.S. Code 3056, the Secret Service also protects the immediate families of the president. In Trump's case, that means his wife Melania and his five children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany, and Barron. Because most of them live in New York City, that potentially means more traffic stops as they move around.

Dan Bongino is retired secret service agent. He protected the Clintons, Bushes, and Obamas while those families were in the White House. He weighed in on what protection for the Trumps could look like.

The president has the authority to expand Secret Service protection to anyone he wants. President George W. Bush did that for more family members after 9/11. President Barack Obama extended did it to include senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.

Trump has eight grandchildren, some of whom you saw on stage when he won the Republican nomination. He could extend Secret Service protection to them or to his ex-wives Ivana Trump and Marla Maples.

Because of specialized training, which can take 10 years, the Secret Service has far fewer agents than other agencies do.

The NYPD and Secret Service are together working on a plan for how to deal with this new reality securing the president and his family when he is in residence at Trump Tower. Police Commissioner James O'Neill said they would find a solution -- one that New Yorkers will have to learn to live with at least for the next four years.
