The Perfect Fit: Choosing the right tuxedo

From Frank Sinatra to James Bond, the tuxedo has been a cultural and sartorial staple for years. It's traced back to the late 19th Century in New York's very own Tuxedo Park, but today's tuxedo is creating a legacy all its own.

Matthew Marden, the Fashion Director at Details magazine invited us into the very exclusive Details fashion closet to find the perfect tux. For Marden, "classic is best," starting with a self-tie bow tie.

And since the tuxedo is an investment that can last for years, be sure to select a style that will stand the test of time. For our visit, Marden chose a navy shawl collar tuxedo from J. Crew, explaining that "everyone looks good in a shawl collar." And for an alternative look, he suggested pairing the tuxedo with a long tie.

Then there are the times when you want to get a bit more creative with your black tie. For Marden, those are the opportunities to go for a color other than black. And for those occasions that are "black tie optional," he encourages men to stick with black tie "because you never know." Of course, Marden explains, "you can always wear a black suit with a white shirt and a black necktie, and you'll look fantastic."

As for the shoes? Think beyond patent. Marden encourages men to mix it up with brogue dress shoes, tuxedo slippers, or even a pair of sneakers!

Of course, don't forget a simple white pocket square, and you're good to go for the next wedding, red carpet, or wherever your next adventure takes you.
