SUV crashes into person on sidewalk in Manhattan

Two people were critically injured when an SUV jumped a curb on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  It happened at Madison Ave. and E 64th Street on Thursday afternoon just before 5 p.m.

The vehicle smashed through a trash can and mailbox as it went onto the sidewalk and smashed into a storefront.  Contents from the trash can were spread across the scene.

It was unclear what caused the SUV to go onto the sidewalk but it was reportedly going up Madison Avenue "out of control" before the crash.

One pedestrian and the driver were taken to Cornell Medical Center in critical condition.  A passenger in the SUV was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The incident was causing big traffic delays during the evening rush hour commute because police closed Madison Avenue in that area.
