Subway service restored with delays after disruption

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - A failure on the computer system that powers signals caused the suspension of service along the Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and Grand Central-42 Street S train lines for more than an hour, stranding riders in trains that were stuck in between stations.

Officials urged passengers to remain in train cars while crews work as quickly as possible to bring people into stations, the AP reported.

"For safety reasons trains were required to maintain their positions at the time of the interruption, and some of those trains were in between stations when that occurred," MTA Communications Director Tim Minton said. "We worked to progressively move trains into stations while, simultaneously, technicians were successfully able to reboot the servers. We believe that no trains lost power or AC during the outage."

The "total stoppage" of service happened at 5:50 p.m. and restoration began at 7:16 p.m., Minton said.

"We do not currently have indications that this was heat or power related, but investigations are underway," he said.
