Study: Talking to your mom makes things better

- I don't know about you but I talk to my mother every day and when I have good news or bad news the first person I want to share it with is my mom. What is it about mothers, that they just make everything better?

Dr. Nava Silton, a clinical psychologist, said a mother is the foundation of everything. The first bond you ever create is with your mom.

"Already in utero, you develop this incredible relationship with your mother," Silton said. "And that really strong attachment bond really continues throughout development."

A recent study at the University of Missouri found that young women felt overwhelmingly more positive after sharing a difficult experience with their mother, even if she didn't immediately have a solution to the problem.

"[Mothers] have this incredible way of comforting their children," Silton said. "They've had to comfort them in many ways, whether it be through sickness or through challenging situations. And so I think they're used to knowing exactly what to say to make things right."

Some may not live close to their mother, yet that doesn't keep them from picking up the phone and calling often.

Silton said when men pick up the phone and call someone, it's for information, but when women call is to try to establish an emotional bond.

"There's this is real level of emotional intimacy that you can achieve in having a conversation with your mother," Silton said.

That is an important bond to remember as we celebrate Mother's Day.
