Should you bribe your kids to eat veggies?

- How do you get kids to eat fruits and veggies? Well if you've tried everything, a new study finds that just a few weeks of bribing your kids to eat their fruits and veggies could lead to long-term healthy eating habits

In the study, students who ate their produce were rewarded with a token that could be redeemed for prizes, leading to an instantaneous jump in consumption. And more importantly, a couple of months after the reward system ended, 21 percent more students were eating their fruits and veggies than before the program started.

The study involved 8,000 children at 40 elementary schools in Utah and lasted between 3 and 5 weeks.  Like many things in life, researchers also noticed that the healthy eating trend caught on faster when the "cool kids" bought in early on.

Study co-author Greg Madden said, “The rewards can be used to encourage children to repeatedly try fruits and vegetables and there is some evidence to suggest that repeatedly tasting novel foods increases their acceptability.”

The study was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
