Police in Munich say an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich was behind an attack at a mall that left nine people dead before he took his own life.  They believe he acted alone but don't have a motive yet.

The shooting took place at a McDonalds at the sprawling mall.

Video from the scene at the Olympia- Einkaufszentrum mall shows people running from the shopping center.

Police initially thought that there were at least two other shooting incidents in the city and that as many as three gunmen were involved.

The suspect's body was found about 2 1/2 hours after the attack and was determined to be the shooter based on witness statements and closed circuit television footage of the attack. The shooter was not previously known to police and there was no evidence of any links to terrorist organizations

A "cautious all clear" was given by police.  The US Consulate in Munich had advised all Americans to shelter in place because of "multiple shooting incidents in the city."

The attack started shortly before 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) according to Munich police spokesman Thomas Baumann. He was quoted as saying that it was a "shooting rampage."

On Monday, a 17-year-old Afghan wounded four people in an ax-and-knife attack on a regional train near the Bavarian city of Wuerzburg, and another woman outside as he fled. All survived, although one man from the train remains in life-threatening condition. The attacker was shot and killed by police.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the train attack, but authorities have said the teen likely acted alone.

Countries throughout Europe remain on high alert following recent terror attacks.
