Sharon Jones of the Dap-Kings dies

Soul singer Sharon Jones of the Dap-Kings died Friday in New York. She was 60.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings," stated a message on her official website. "Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.

Jones was diagnosed with Stage 2 pancreatic cancer in 2013, the AP reported.

The documentary "Miss Sharon Jones!" from Oscar-winning director Barbara Kopple chronicled Jones's life from her cancer diagnosis, being forced to cancel a tour, getting treatment, and making back to the stage.

The band is described this way on its website: "Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have bypassed the hype-and-hit superhighway and taken a detour straight to the hearts of their listeners, delivering a visceral rhythm and soul sound to an ever-expanding fan base."
