Several injured in Harlem high rise fire

A fire that started in a high-rise building's trash compactor left 19 people injured.

It happened about 10:15 p.m. on Monday night on the ninth floor of 410 St. Nicholas Ave. in Harlem.

About 100 FDNY Fire and EMS units battled flames and heavy smoke conditions to carry out rescues in the 28 story building.

FDNY members said that they were operating in blackout conditions in several apartments where residents were trapped.

One woman was found hanging out of her 23rd floor apartment window, gasping for air and crying for help.  Her panic-stricken son was at her feet.

One firefighter and five residents has serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The fire was under control at midnight.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
