River sweeps away father and son from Queens; bodies found

- Searchers have found the bodies of a father and son from Queens who were swept away in a river in upstate New York over the weekend, according to the State Police.

State troopers and forest rangers found Marco Avila, 46, and Marcos Avila, 9, in the Neversink River near Shore Drive in Cuddebackville in Orange County on Monday.

On Saturday at about 10:30 a.m., Marcos and another child were rafting on the river near their campsite when Marcos fell out of the raft, police said. His father dove into the water and managed to help Marcos back into the rafter when it flipped over, police said. Father and son did not resurface.

Search crews from the State Police, Department of Environmental Conservation, local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services searched for the pair during daylight on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

From the confluence of its two source branches, the Neversink River flows 55 miles through Sullivan and Orange counties into the Delaware River in Port Jervis.

Cuddebackville is about 50 miles northwest of New York City.
