Metro-North service suspended; NJ Transit crippled

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - The powerful nor'easter that pummeled the New York area Wednesday with snow, rain, and wind caused a mess on the region's railroads. CLICK HERE FOR UPDATES

Metro-North Railroad's New Haven, Harlem, and Hudson lines are all suspended as of Wednesday evening due to downed trees and "weather-related infrastructure issues," according to the MTA.

Service is suspended until further notice and the MTA does not have an estimate of when it might be restored.

Train service on Metro-North's Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines, which is handled by New Jersey Transit, is on a severe weather schedule. Most service is fully or partly suspended.

Long Island Rail Road commuters found themselves in a bind during the evening rush when service on at least five different lines was suspended because of signal problems or downed power lines.

Amtrak also canceled a number of its trains because of power issues and dangerous conditions. Service is suspended between New York City and Boston in both directions.
