Queen Latifah is behind a real estate development in Newark

A mixed-use development that has been planned for Newark for a few years will finally break ground this summer, according to a report. And it has a famous name attached: Queen Latifah.

The singer, rapper and actress was born in the Brick City and grew up in neighboring East Orange and Irvington.

The development, a joint venture between BlueSugar Corp. and GonSosa Development, will be located at Springfield Avenue and South 17th Street. Queen Latifah is a co-president of BlueSugar.

The project will feature 76 residential units (townhomes and apartments) and commercial space, according to Real Estate NJ, which cited a press release.

Rents will reportedly start around $1,800 a month and are expected to open by December 2020, reported NJ.com.

Units in the affordable housing building will be priced based on the person's income. It is expected to be finished by December 2021.

Queen Latifah, whose real name is Dana Elaine Owens, was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 2002's Chicago. She appears in the FOX drama Star, now in its third season.
