Protesters call for closing Rikers Island

- Cries to close Rikers Island are growing. The songs of freedom turned into a full on assault of the notorious jail Sunday outside Gracie Mansion. Leaders demanded Mayor Bill de Blasio close the notorious jail marked by violence and corruption.

Lead by those in the clergy and those in the community, some with loved ones locked up. They were every shade, connected by the human race. They ranged in age but not in perspective. They say what has been missing in the past is the voice of the community.

The protest followed a screening and panel discussion of the documentary "Rikers" by Bill Moyers at John Jay College on Wednesday.

Many of those locked up at Rikers are awaiting trial, sentencing or dismissal. Not all are innocent. But most have deeply troubling stories.

The push to close Rikers continued with a second round of community meetings with the Lippman Commission.
