The NYPD investigated a suspicious package found near the Port Authority Bus Terminal Wednesday evening, prompting street closures and the evacuation of a couple of buildings.

"Due to police activity, expect a heightened presence of emergency personnel, emergency vehicles, and traffic delays in the area of West 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan," an alert from the city said.

The Port Authority said it shut down two entrances to the terminal as a precaution but has since reopened one of them.

Police blocked off 8th Avenue, stopping traffic.

The package -- a backpack -- turned out to be harmless.
