Police: Angry driver shoots at car that cut him off on Long Island

ISLIP TERRACE, N.Y. (FOX 5 NY) - An apparent road rage incident erupted in gunfire on a highway on Long Island Tuesday morning, police said.

New York state troopers pulled over two vehicles on the Long Island Expressway and arrested Paul Rizzo Jr., 57, of Centereach, who was at the wheel of one of the cars.

Rizzo had gotten angry at the driver of the other car, which had cut him off while leaving a gas station in Islip Terrace at 5:20 a.m., police said.

"The incident continued onto the Southern State Parkway westbound, both vehicles swerving at each other until exit 43, where Rizzo grabbed his loaded handgun and fired one round from the driver's window striking the front passenger side of the other vehicle," State Police said in a news release.

The driver of the car that was shot called 911 and followed Rizzo onto the LIE, where police caught up to them.

Authorities charged Rizzo with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, menacing, reckless endangerment of property, and unlawful possession of marihuana.

The suspect's age has been corrected from an earlier version of this story after the information was changed by the state police.
