Officer, suspect dead in gunfight; another officer wounded

An sheriff's deputy died Sunday afternoon of injuries he sustained during an early-morning shootout while he and another officer were serving a warrant related to drug paraphernalia, officials said.

Howard County Sheriff's Deputy Carl Koontz, 27, had been on the force for three years. He is survived by a wife and young child. "[Koontz] was an outstanding officer, he had great promise with our agency, and he's going to be greatly missed," Sheriff Steven Rogers said.

The suspected shooter, who has not been identified, also died, following a standoff with a SWAT team. Authorities said they don't know whether he was killed in a shootout or from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
