Off-duty lifeguards save swimmers in Long Beach

Several City of Long Beach lifeguards did what they were trained to do even though they were off duty Thursday.

Officials say two people started going under. Four others tried to help and got themselves in trouble. Responders say all six of them were thankful they survived. The lifeguards weren't on duty because they ended their season on Labor Day. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time. They're breaking down equipment and putting things away for the winter.

Chief Lifeguard Paul Gillespie has an important message for anyone going to beach this weekend: do not swim.

While you can't swim in Long Beach, New York officials extended swimming at state beaches on Long Island through next weekend. Lifeguards will be on duty at Hither Hill, Jones Beach Field 6, West Bathhouse Ocean Beach and Central Mall, Robert Moses, and Sunken Meadow.
