Uncertainty is a reality that members of the NYPD and their families have to confront every day they put on that uniform. Commissioner Bill Bratton announced Tuesday an added line of protection to keep officers safe.

A fleet of about 60 cruisers with bulletproof door panels and windows will roll out this week as part of a pilot program.

The front-seat window panels are about 2 inches thick and will help shield the officers' heads. The ballistic glass door panel covers the midsection of the front doors.

Glass panels cost about $4,200 for each vehicle. The 90-day test program will allow officers to field test the technology to make sure it meets officers' needs.
