NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Officers with the NYPD step up every day to help the people of New York. Now one sergeant is going above and beyond to help his wife.
Sgt. Mario DiLeo is set to donate a kidney to his wife Jodi, who received a kidney more than 30 years ago from her father—also a cop.
Now a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with mounting medical bills.
"In recent months, Jodi's kidney function has drastically declined and she is in need of a 2nd transplant. Fortunately, a 2nd generation of law enforcement has come to the rescue," the GoFundMe campaign says. Her husband, Sergeant Mario Di Leo, underwent numerous tests and has been deemed a match!"
The organ transplant is scheduled for Feb 12 at Mount Sinai Hospital. Mario and Jodi face a long road to recovery.
Their health insurance will cover some of their costs but they will need help with various expenses, including copays, deductibles, medications, transportation to and from their appointments, and child care for their son.
Chief of Detectives Dermont Shea tweeted his support on Thursday.
