- The NYPD confirms that it is investigating allegations of an assault involving former New York governor Eliot Spitzer at the swanky Plaza Hotel in Midtown.

Manhattan detectives say they "are attempting to further establish the identity of the subject and the nature of the incident."

According to published reports, Spitzer is accused of choking a woman in a room inside the hotel on Saturday night.

Fox 5 News reported that the incident happened after the woman told Spizter that she was planning to return to her native Russia.

The woman reportedly cut her wrists after the incident and was taken to Roosevelt Hospital.  She is reportedly not cooperating with the police investigation.

A spokesperson for Spitzer issued a short statement saying "There is no truth to the allegation.

No charges had been filed as of Monday morning.

Spitzer resigned from office in 2008 after a scandal involving prostitutes.  He later had a cable news talk show.

He tried to make a political comeback in 2013 but his bid to become New York City comptroler failed when he lost the Democratic primary.  Spitzer and his wife split that year.
