NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Police Department has deployed extra officers to visit mosques during morning prayers as a precaution.

The step was taken on Friday in the wake of shootings at mosques in New Zealand.

The NYPD says it's committed to the safety of all houses of worship and "the freedom to practice your religion freely without any fear."
