NYC Board of Elections promises to be ready for Nov. 8

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - With New York's voter registration deadline looming and Election Day now just weeks away, the Board of Elections says it will be ready. Executive Director Michael Ryan said the board is hitting all its marks and expects to be ready to serve voters on November 8.

It comes amid issues just this week of BOE staff being unable to provide absentee ballots and after troubles on primary day in April including polling locations opening hours late, voters being sent to different locations, and over 100,000 voters purged from the Brooklyn voter rolls. Ryan says those voters have been restored to the rolls.

Still, the sub-par primary day performance led New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer to launch a top-to-bottom audit of the elections board.

New York's voter laws are some of the more restrictive in the country, with closed primaries, no early voting, no Election Day registration, and a cumbersome absentee ballot process. That all makes the empire state 46th in voter turnout across the country

With two New Yorkers -- Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton -- on the ballot, the comptroller says the Board of Elections should be working to make it easy for all New Yorkers to have a say.
